Well, time for my introduction, I guess. I'm Alyssa and I live in Northern California.
I got my first three pullets in spring of 2018 (so I am pretty new to this). All three of those pullets were tragically eaten by raccoons at different points of time over the last year and have been replaced with three new chickens who are all laying and happy and secured.
The three current breeds we have are a golden sex link (definitely the matriarch of our flock), a blue ameraucana (second-in-command and a great guarddog - chases away all squirrels and birds from our lot), and a salmon faverolle (everyone's sidekick and sassy little sister who likes to get in trouble).
I love raising backyard chickens because they're delightful entertainment, they have such funny personalities, make great outdoor pets, and as a bonus, we get eggs!
Aside from raising chickens, I enjoy playing with my new baby, my small dogs (2 - they both live in such harmony with the chickens), small cats (also 2 - they give the chickens a wide berth because the chickens can pick on them), and I also love to cook and play video games and do DIY work on my house.
I've ben reading threads on BYC for years now (way before even getting chickens), as I've always wanted to own chickens and finally bought a house with a nice coop already built in.
