hi there. just get started off saying that i love this site. i researched all different kind of stuff on here before i bought my chicks. my chicks are now respectively 5 weeks old and the baby is 4 weeks. we lost one of our originals at a week old and they seemed to have accepted a new one. 3 buffs buff orpingtons. 3 barred rocks, 1 dominique and 1 austrolorp. Though im not positive which is the dominique. Thank you all who have posted all the generous knowledge on here and looking forward to getting to know more.

So glad you decided to join us & congrats on your new flock.

So sorry about the loss.

The BR and Dom should look alike at this point, but the Dom will have a pea comb. If you see 3 showing tiny combs and 1 not showing yet, then that's the Dom.

Good luck with your new adventure.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Actually Dominques have rose combs rather than pea combs, but the comb is still the way to tell them from the Barred Rocks as Barred Rocks have single combs. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. Good luck with your flock.

Thank you for the warm welcome and iv learned something already. As for the baby chick it was a tragic loss and i learned my lesson. Poor baby got under a piece of cardboard i had under the water and feed when i wasnt home. I ripped all the cardboard out after that. it is quite possible that we lost the dom and not one of the barred rocks. there were orginally 4 barred rocks. can i post pics of them here or is there another forum i should be using? i will have to catch them first, just got the coop finished and they stay in that for a few hours everyday to get used to it and its hard to catch them.

Hello, and welcome to BYC!

I'm glad you joined our community.

I'm sorry for your losses! If you want to know which chick is a Dominique, just post photos of them, showing their combs. You could post photos here, but might get more answers in the What Breed or Gender section: What Breed Or Gender is This?

Also i seem to have one that is mean and i'm not sure if it is actually mean or just pushy looking for food. It jumps at my face every-time i try and pick it up and the others don't do that. This is my first time with chickens, I had them growing up but that was different. so everything is still a mystery.

my nieces had already named them and i wasn't going to tell them. kind of like switching the gold fish but they noticed and seemed to take it better then me. i'm positive i know which one is the dominque now. which would explain why its so jumpy. we orignally

named the dominque jitter bean because it jumped out of the box at the petstore and ran across the till.
