Vancouver Island
Hello all! I'm Lindsay and I live on Vancouver Island in BC, Canada. We just recently moved out of the city to a 1.4 acre lot and chickens are the first big project we're undertaking. We've done tons of reading and preparing, but now that it's actually happening I feel like I have no clue what I'm doing.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We have never had chickens before. Our only prior exposure to chickens is at fairs and petting zoos, so this will be fun.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None, but we have 12 chicks coming in March.

(3) What breeds do you have?
We have three each of Rhode Island Red, Welsummer, Ameraucana, and Belgian d'Uccle coming. They are unsexed so we're hoping to end up with 4-6 laying hens in the end (not really counting the bantams which are more for pets/fun). Depending on how that goes, I'd love to get some Silkies in the future, as well as maybe Chanteclers at some point.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Probably Google.

It's been bookmarked for a while.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm musical and love to play the piano and flute. Among us, we also enjoy reading, anything outdoorsy, gardening (I'm currently also learning about permaculture), video games, scrapbooking, sewing and many other crafts, and lots more I'm probably forgetting.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a stay-at-home mom to two daughters, age 3 and almost 1 year. My husband is a software developer and works part time in the office and part time at home. His goal is for us to find other ways to make money so he can quit his day job. We haven't ruled out eventually moving off the island to make this possible. We will be homeschooling our kids (we're life learners). We have a dog and two cats already. We're considering getting ducks as well (they are my older daughter's favourite), but I don't want to dive in too deep to start.

I think that covers most of it! Looking forward to reading and learning more.

Hello fellow Canadian\\\\

I'm all the way from the other side of Canada, and fairly new too. Just have my 4 original chickens which I got last July. One rooster and 3 hens, all silver-penciled Plymouth Rocks.\\\\

Good luck with your new birds - still to come!
