Hello everyone! I've had various breeds of chickens ever since a friend gave me some chicks shortly after we bought our farm. We started our journey with that original batch of mixed birds. Then, then I decided I would like to concentrate on owning some heritage breeds. So dabbled with the Chantecler and a few others for pretty feather patterns and eggs. I've owned and loved buff Orpingtons, Barnevelder, Welsummer, Turken, EE, Barred Rock, Speckled Sussex, Blue Andalusian, Penedesenca, Wheaten Marans, Gold Laced Wyandotte. Not sure if I got them all, if I had the money I'd probably have as many breeds and colour varieties as possible! They are all so beautiful! I'm not running a bird sanctuary though and finally figured to focus on a nice breed for dual purpose and just back yard pleasure of watching my birds forage and enjoy life!

So after a few years off from trying to incubate anything with my old crappy incubator and a bad attempt at trying to hatch shipped eggs of Penedesenca and Wheaten Marans, I am back on a new journey of raising chicks and trying to work on a flock with 2 goals: nice eggs and meat, keeping a breed true and striving to improve the breed, and to have some nice feathers to look at. My two project goals are to breed a nice flock of French Black Copper Marans, and to start a line of Blue Coppers on the side for fun!

I'm here to share my journey and to learn from the many experienced owners and breeders here and am excited to be a new member of BYC!

I have a few amateur breeding questions on the Marans for colour selection but not sure where to post them whether it should be on the FBCM thread or what. I'll try that! Thank you for reading!

! Great to have you aboard! Sorry you've had rough hatching luck! Good luck to you in the future.

Thanks Redsox! Well given the known variability of hatch success rates for shipped eggs, I should have known not to attempt it in my old bator which I practically had to babysit to ensure proper heat and humidity levels! Out of 2 dozen eggs, I hatched 2 wheaten Marans (one died next day after hatch) and one Penedesenca both boys! My wheaten Marans turned out to be the nicest Roo but didn't have the black breast required by the standard. Sadly he didn't want to come in one night and a fox got him. Poor Manny!

That's bad luck, sorry about your roo. There' so many experienced chicken owners here, I am sure everyone will be helpful - that's what I have found.

Thanks Spikes Chooks! I sure am looking forward to learning from the wealth of knowledge here. I used to be a member of thecoop.org but not even sure if its still going. Every time I did a google search on something chicken related this site came up so I decided to take the plunge and join!

Haha! I'm sure! Well I do find these forums to be so helpful even when I was just learning to care for poultry, I learned so much more online than from books!
