Welcome to BYC from Keystone Heights, FL! Build the biggest coop that your able to build, because you'll always wish it were bigger. I started with a 6 x 9, then added (2) seperate 4 x 8's, then low and behold needed even more space. Over Christmas vacation the DH built a 32 x 9 divided into 5 seperate breeding stalls. Do you plan on buying live chicks or going through the hatch process? My kids love hatching eggs. So do I. Our state NPIP testing agent told me to stay away from any live chickens sold at auction and to buy from other NPIP chicken owners to keep a healthy flock disease free.
Chicken choices!! Oh my, there are so many. Out of the breeds I own, my white leghorns lay the largest eggs of all, and on a very dependable basis. They are not the most personable though.
My friendliest chickens are my Orpingtons and my Barred Rocks. They are large, and great layers.
Spend some time doing some research in choosing a breed/breeds. After that it shouldn't be hard, with the help from the people on this forum, to find said birds.
