I am very new to raising chickens. I have however, raised indoor pet birds before. We bought my 2 boys 6 pullets shortly after the Easter boom at the local feed store. They having been laying for the last 3 weeks now. I know that they are RI reds, but I think that they are a cross breed. Although a lot of their white feathers are gone now. I am worried about how to care for them this winter as we get a lot of snow here. They are free ranged most of the day and put in what I believe is called a chicken tractor the rest of the time.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I can't help much on the winters. I only can tell you that the coop should be draft free with good ventilation. I'm sure some others can give you some better answers.

i am in pennellville!
my chickens love the winter, well most of the time. mine are free range all day, also in the winter. i don't think a "tractor" will work for the winter, but that is my own opinion. i think you may need more of a coop off the grond a little so they aren't in the snow. i don't know where in central ny you are, but here i would have a tractor buried, no sign of it, by dec....
 
It's not a total on the ground tractor. It's a coop with nest boxes up high and a ladder to get the ground part. I think it's a tractor because it is on wheels so we can move it around when the grass gets too dirty. I don't know how to put a picture on this post so I'll put one on my blog.

Do people really let their chickens out to play in the snow?
 
Wow! Cool. I thought they'd get frostbite on their feet if you let them out. They are sunbathing on my porch right now, but I know it will be snowing sooner than we want to think!!

I am in Manlius, at the edge of Pompey. Restoring an old dairy farm. I too, am concerned about our winters for my flock. They free range during the day, and roost in the old milk house. Cooler weather is already here. Hoping for the best during the long cold...Jan-Feb.
 
they keep each other warm in the winter but the need an area with no drafts, but still vented. i was very worried myself but they did pretty good.
