Hi, my name is Lothie, and I just got my first chick. I know generally one starts with a little flock, but what happened is that my friend Kit and her husband offered me their "extra" chick from their starter flock.
I went over to their house last night to do crafts and pick out my little peeper, and I fell in love with a baby Barnevelder (I believe -- they got a mixed assortment so I'm just guessing for now). She has the curled toe problem, which I knew when I picked her; I just felt so sorry for her! So I took her home, and my husband and I are trying her out with cardboard/bandaid booties and hoping that works.
She's an absolute joy so far. We do plan to follow up with more chicks later, but we live in the city so we're being cautious. Someday we'll have a little farm of our own!
This forum has already been invaluable (Kit referred me here for pictures and instructions on the chicken booties), so I'm sure that I'll learn a lot!
