I'm glad you joined.

Orpingtons and Brahmas in particular are generally very docile and great for children. Plymouth Rocks are sometimes a little standoffish, but they aren't usually aggressive.

If you son is rather young Silkies are great with kids - small enough to handle and usually very tolerant of riding on toy trucks, pushed in strollers, etc. etc. Maybe he could have a couple as house pets.

Generally the bigger breeds pick on silkies because they are docile and don't look like ordinary chickens. They are not the greatest layers BUT, then tend to be among the best broodys - which means they have strong tendencies to sit on and hatch eggs, theirs or any fertile eggs you put under them. Some breeders have silkies just to use as living incubators. All silkies aren't so inclined and you can't make a hen go broody, it is a hormonal thing. But when they are broody they are extremely dedicated to carrying on the job.

PS there is a great thread on BYC called "people with house chickens."

I'm glad you joined us!

The breeds you've chosen should be very docile birds, especially the Brahma and Orpington. They should get along nicely, and be relatively productive egg layers.
