ur landlord should know how you will move the coop every 2-3 months
free fertlizer to put into his flower bed and of course
a dozen
free eggs come with the territory..
when they are avaiable. LOL
 
As a former Chicagoan (1 block from Wrigley Field for 30 years) make sure you can legally keep poultry in your backyard.

It would be a shame to get all setup and have a neighbor complain to the alderman and have to get rid of your flock or get fined.

Thanks for all of the support and quite helpful suggestions. I like the idea of a small, mobile chicken coop that is easily disassembled. My back yard is small and I do not plan to stay in this apartment long term, so a modular coop is in order. Before a coop is built, however, I must present my landlord with a chicken management plan. Thanks for all of the help.
 
As far as I know it is perfectly legal to keep laying hens in the City of Chicago. Roosters are not allowed, and you are not allowed to raise animals with the intent to slaughter, but there are no city ordinances against raising chickens to the best of my knowledge.

I grew up north of Chicago in Lake county, it is indeed a lovely place and making me miss it, except for the traffic. Good luck with your new birds and welcome from one new egg to another!

Uh-oh! You're in trouble! You think that you can be satisfied with just a couple of chickens and then boom - it hits ya. Chicken addiction! Then you have to have more and more and more. There is no end to the obsession and soon you'll need a whole city block!

On the serious side, I've seen a rabbit hutch with a small run used for a chicken coop. I think it'd be easy to move. Good luck with the landlord!
