Hello everyone,
I grew up in the Mid-Michigan area and half my family and nearly every one of my friends lived on or next to a farm. When I traveled the world I spent the most of it in the city and I'm yearning for those open spaces and eventful days of the past.
So now that I'm settled here in China I decided to try an experiment.
I'm going to raise a couple chickens and turkeys on my rooftop garden here in the middle of the city.
So far so good. The two baby chickens are growing fast and starting to get good wing and tail feathers in. The turkeys are healthy and active, but one of them has a respiratory infection that I'm watching. Should be fine now, but just taking it slow.
I can’t believe how they compare to my uncle's chicken farm. That place stank and my garden is only about 15 x 20 feet with nothing more than a couple shrubs and tile. I figured it would be a smell hazard in the mid-day sun, but it’s no problem at all and almost a little nostalgic to have a really mild animal smell around.
Wish me luck as we'll see how the turkeys are doing in a few months when they are full size. They're only a couple months old now.
I'm sure to have plenty of stories as they grow, and get into trouble with our 3 dogs.
Sounds more like a farm than an apartment sometimes.
