Hello from Cincinnati, Ohio

Hi Michelle,
Glad you joined us!
have you decided what kind of chickens you will get?
Are you getting them mostly for pets or eggs?
I hope you enjoy it here as much as me!
Welcome to the backyard!
I'm not sure on the kind yet. I know I want them to be easy to handle (my daughter is 8 and will definitely want to help me), good egg layers, easy for a newbie, and able to withstand our winters without too much trouble (average temps in the 20 F, but we have negative wind chills at times).

Michelle...please be aware that almost all prefab coops lie about how many chickens the coop will hold.

While you are shopping for a coop please pay attention to the measurements of the coop.
You need at least 4 square feet PER bird if they are only sleeping in the coop.
If you aren't able to free range your birds daily you will need more square feet pet bird or you will send up with preventable flock problems.

Thank you. I know they all list as way too small. I am only planning on having 3-4 chickens max (my yard can't handle a run any larger). The first thing I've done when looking at the prefab ones is calculate the square footage....that knocked a lot of ones I liked off the list. The run I am looking at for them is 10 ft x 6.5 ft, or possibly 10 ft x 10 ft.

Hi! Welcome to BYC! You are already doing a good job on research before getting your chicks. There is so much information on this site for you to read, and I'm sure you will. Also, just ask questions. Lots of great people here to help you out. :D

You have not learned chicken math yet! But Welcome, and good cluck with your flock!
