I am moving into my first house in Cleveland soon, and plan to get chickens either this spring (if I'm really ambitious) or spring of 2017. This has been such a great place for information so far in figuring out what I need to get started!

I love birds, but am completely new to chickens. Cleveland allows up to 6 hens, but I'm looking to get 4 at first since I hear I'll end up wanting more. I'm specifically looking at Wyandottes because I love their coloring and I need something very cold hardy for our cold winters and lake effect snow.

My biggest challenge at the moment is figuring out how to build the coop and a roofed run as a complete construction novice, which seems like a very intimidating task. But I'm looking forward to raising some chickens and learning lots of new things along the way!

You're going to love having chickens! They are so personable and fun.

To get an idea of what kind of coop/run set up works for you, take a look at these:

If you have questions about building a coop and/or run, you can ask here:

And last, if you would like to chat with other members close by you, go say hello on your state thread. Members in your state can give you some great ideas on housing, poultry breeders, etc.:

Good luck to you!

Hi, I'm in the same boat-new house and wanting chickens. Yes, the whole coop thing is a bit overwhelming. There's a cute Ikea Hack for a coop. It's not necessarily cheaper than 100% from scratch, but it provides a square-cornered frame to start from-which is what I find most daunting.
