I have a 3/4 silky 1/4 WY dot (sp?). I had 2 but peep passed away with an incident with a doggy play date gone wrong. koala has layer twice since the sad day but now has not layer since (3 days). She keeps in her nesting box like she's brooding but with no eggs. I brought her out to check if she was egg bound and she's not. At that point she was eating and drinking, and acting just fine. When I put her back in the coop she b lined back to the nesting box. I just want to see if anyone has any suggestions or advice? She is 7-8 Mos old and had been laying daily previously.
Thanks!
Jessica
Hello and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about Peep you lost Sounds like Koala is broody, really common with silkies, they will "brood" nothing (doesn't have to have eggs) if you don't want to try and let her hatch eggs or get her chicks you may have to "break" her of being broody since silkies are really stubborn about it and many will brood indefinitely... there are several nice articles in the Learning Center on broody hens you might want to check out, they also mention ways to break hens of being broody (I like the wire cage method mentioned) https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-and-raising-chicks
Silkies generally have strong broody instincts - yours may too ,even though she is a mix. When a hen goes broody they will sit on eggs, rocks, or thin air and expect to hatch babies. Chickens are not rocket scientists
During this time they may get aggressive and screech and bite if you approach their nest. They may also refuse to leave to eat/drink and poo. If this is the case you have to physically put them outside 2 or 3 times a day to take care of business. Otherwise some will literally starve to death.
You will know if she is TRULY committed to hatching eggs if she stays on the nest day after day and doesn't roost or interact with the flock. If she doesn't lay more eggs, you could get a few fertile ones (any breed) and place them in the nest (night is a good time). She will brood them and treat them as her own after hatch.
