My name is Michelle (my grand kids call me "Mimi") and I am brand new here. My grandson Dylan actually asked me if we couldn't try raising chickens and really, how do you say 'no' to your grandchild?? Been reading for months now, thinking, planning, deciding but wow, it's a bit overwhelming! Since my husband and 3 sons are builders , I thought I would just order plans and presto-a chicken coop and run! Ha! There are so many to choose from, some sites "selling" plans seem a little shady...anyone know of a reputable site or book to purchase? I have my brooder ready to go and my chicks will arrive wk of April 30, so need to get started on the coop. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Welcome Michelle!

Glad you joined! Don't keep your chickens in a chicken tractor, (the ones that are on grass) because raccoon's will dig under, and devastate the chickens, and if your grandson saw that, he'd probably not want to keep chickens anymore, (almost happened to me when I was little) because how raccoon's do their work, isn't a quick kill.

Welcome to BYC Michelle!

Sorry.. I don't know about a good book or site.

Here is the coop and run I made (well.. not the coop. I bought it from craigslist). The run was easy and cheep to make.

..and here is the coop.

I don't have pictures of it attached yet. Hope this gives you a good idea.

from Western WI! If your guys are handy at building, they may be able to cobble something togther just by looking at some of the examples in the coop design area. I made my coop by modifying some shed plans I had. You might find a book on it at your local building center or library. Be sure to post a picture of what you end up with.
