We started with chickens in February this year. With 2 buff orpingtons. Stella and Goldie, long story short Goldie passed away Easter from underlying Illness we could not help. Went and got another chick as close in age as we could.. Luna an Araucana. Now stella has been laying since July 19.. a week ago Sunday she layed a much larger egg. Took Monday off then back to normal Tuesday. Well this past Sunday she did a larger egg again.. then in morning Monday there were 2 soft shell eggs in 2 different spots.. then later Monday afternoon she went in nesting box was in there 2 hrs.. I checked onher regularly. No egg.. then she came out and was fine.. yesterday nothing. Acting her normal self.. but when I went to tuck them in there was a soft shell in run.. today she went in box. Nothing .. now out... she eats purina layer feed has free choice oyster shell. Fresh water everywhere. Yes hot... ice water... ice bottles in sand to stand on.. fan... no mites.. as for Luna she's been crowing so we think maybe she's a he... very frustrated at this point.. but love them

Young pullets can take a while to get their egglaying machines in gear. But they can also have genetic issues that prevent proper laying. Make sure to offer oyster shell and if she continues after a couple months, you might try adding Caltrate, the human calcium supplement. Sometimes certain minerals are missing to allow the calcium to work and Caltrate has it all.

Good luck and welcome to our community!
