Just wanted to say hi and properly introduce myself... I've been lurking around BYC since we adopted our Pekin duck pair two years ago and really love the site. I never would have been able to hatch our first duckling, Captain Nemo, without the advice here. Our female had died from ingesting toxic seeds (long and very heartbreaking story), so we were determined to successfully incubate her last egg. Despite a bacterial infection and extreme weakness at birth Nemo managed to pull through and grow into a healthy young drake... he is staring at me right now, chatting with his dad, Nibbler, wondering where the heck his snack is. LOL.

We have recently decided to take the plunge into chickenland and have four hen chicks on the way.

The ducks live in our backyard on a custom pond we built for them and sleep in the house at night. Chicken coop is in progress for the new hens. Pics for the Pekin Club when I can figure out how to attach them!!

Thanks for all the great insight and assistance so far...

! Happy to have you aboard! Good luck to you and your ducks and chicks!

Thank you! It is hard to be on the site and see everyone's adorable pics, tho... much as I love my two boys, I miss having sweet baby duckies!! It took every ounce of self control to not order more ducklings with the new chicks!

Ican give you a good reasonswhy you should get more ducks. The drakes are going to get randy and will be after your pullets/hens. Because of differences in duck-chicken anatomy the boys can end up killing chickens they attempt to breed. They need some girl ducks.

Ha, ha! They already go after me!! The young one is the worst since he hasn't had a GF. Poor sex-deprived thing. LOL. The chickens will not be loose in the yard, so they should be OK. But I appreciate the added incentive! I like keeping the ducks in the house with us at night... more than two would seriously impact the air quality.
