Hello from East TN!!

I realized I should correct myself. I initially called my place a micro-homestead, but it’s probably more accurate to call it a mini homestead.

A micro homestead is a small, intentionally managed space where you produce some of your own food, resources, or energy using efficient systems and a self-sufficiency mindset. Usually very small spaces like backyards, suburban lots, urban setups, etc., where people are working within real tight limits. Once you’re over about an acre and can start creating defined zones, it tends to move into mini-homestead territory.

My property is a little over an acre, and my plans include things like a larger garden, a mini "flower farm", chickens, a food stand for selling my goods and things, maybe a goat or two, and longer-term self sufficency systems rather than just maximizing a tiny footprint. I’m also working from a landscape design plan to keep everything intentional and manageable as it grows.

Your son’s 2.5 acres would definitely fit that mini-homestead category as well, especially with a food forest approach. In the end, the label matters less than how thoughtfully the land is being used 🙂
Interesting! His has a flock of feral guineas, a pig, and they are busy planting fruit and nut trees/shrubs, building hügelkultur mounds and hand-digging a pond. My land is almost comp, etelynwooded, so other than raised beds and fruit trees, I just have my chickens (and a host of wildlife who live here).

Your plans sound wonderful!
