Hello from Eastern ON and question about suitable newbie breeds!

Thanks for the input everyone!

I will definitely investigate the other suggested breeds and the link to the Cold Coop was very interesting!

Sounds like I may have to get some chickens from the local farm supply store to start off with but I'll check out the link for Performance Poultry too! I have some time to plan and convince DH that chickens are a good idea, lol!

Australorps and Orpingtons are also bug fluffy birds that do well in cold. They are supposed to tend to go broody but none of mine have, except one BA who kills her chicks. These are the two breeds of mine that are laying at present -- the only two. Two of my EE's lay blue and one a light tan. Haven't had an egg from any of them for 2 or 3 months. One might be in a mini milt but the others aren't.

Areound her the feed stores generally carry BR, BO, BA, and either NHR or RIR. Perfectly good breeds.

Sex links of course means no roo mistakes, all the females you buy will actually be females. But they are mixed breed, and often "wear out" fairly early, meaning they will often lay well only til their major molt around 1.5 years.
