New hear, Kinda new to chickens had a few when i was young. But trying to grow layers now on 5 acres. I want to have free range chickens any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Be sure and lock your chickens up in a predator proof coop at night. There is a good article on the pros and cons of free ranging your chickens at http://www.motherearthnews.com/home.../free-ranging-flock-options-zwfz1307zkin.aspx. If you free range, you are inevitably going to have some losses to predators. It will be up to you to decide whether or not those losses are acceptable. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your layers.

Hey guys just joined the fam im just 5 mnths into this amazing hobby and have learned. Tons from people i met at shows and great forums like this.im so excited and overjoyed at starting my new family. I have a 5 week old baby sai pan chick that ive let run loose aling with a pair of phoenix s my shamos and other sai pans have very large enclosures 15 x20 as its important. To me my babies. Have lots of room i also have a pair of old english in a 5x5 coop that he loves to hang around i asume because they are about his size, anyway i came home yesterday and noticed he was bleeding i freaked out , i have caught him twice inside the shamos pen and suspecr that one of my broody hens may have caused the damage. All tge feathers. And skin from his skull. To his shoulders was gone it looked horrible. I treated with neosporin and brought him in in a dog crate to my bedroom he is healing and doing fine today, is letting him run free range out of the question now ive seen the phoenix. Rooster peck him but just a few times i dont think he did all that mabey my little sai pan rooster is too young to run loose he is the only chicken i have that doesnt have a partner and he is very curious. With all the other birds i need advice on what i should do hes my baby and i dont want anything bad to happen

Thanks for all the info guys. You all seem like a great bunch. Glad to be here.
