Hello ! (from Ft. Pierce, FL)

One of my best friends was married to a Vernon Camp. Her son is also named Vernon Camp, but no idea if there is a Florida connection. The Ft. Pierce man who bought a farm here, subdivided it and sold parcels to his friends in Ft. Pierce is named Meyer. We bought this home from the estate of one of the Ft Pierce folks named Gahn. One of our members and one of my dearest friends, Cetawin (real name Ladyhawk) is from Ft. Pierce as well.

Dear SpeckledHen,

No, they weren't the Camps I was hoping for. They were actually the very nice people we bought our little piece of paradise from. But you never know with coincidences !

We had 2 strange ones just recently....

1. One was when a customer was calling about some chickens and he was actually "on the way" of a road trip my husband and kids are going to be taking next week (but he wanted adult chickens and ours are only 4 months and younger). Too bad, he would have saved a bundle on shipping & box charges ! Who doesn't like free delivery ?! (I'm going to call him next time they make that trip to see their great-grandmother at 94 (?) to check back with him)

2. We had a recent black-out and as soon as my husband reported it online to FPL, the power immediately came back on ! Imagine that. We were kicking ourselves for not thinking about doing that earlier, eating dinner by candlelight, the kids reading books by dim light from the setting sun....we'll know better for next time - how powerful technology really is !

WELCOME ABOARD. I hear your neighbor Burt Reynolds is about to be homeless you could give him a job watching your chickens.

LOL, yeah my husband mentioned that to me the other day !

Apparently a lot of celebrities live around here (or close to here).

I'm not sure I would trust him to watch our chickens. My son does a pretty decent job with them.

Thanks for making me chuckle.

It's always such a pleasure to meet "nice" people on here, versus the other kind that likes to put people down.

Welcome from Palm City, Florida!

I sent my last batch of roos to the auction in Okeechobee. Got a pretty fair price.

It seems that the heavy breeds sell best in this area, even mixes if they are good size.

Edited to add:
See you have seabrights. Do you have any of those available? I know a few people that might want some.

Thanks ! I know there are livestock auctions in Okeechobee and Arcadia. Unfortunately we have mostly bantams, except for one standard breed - the marans.

I would imagine people are buying them up for food ? That's why they want a larger chicken ?

I keep talking to my son about it that he father is not going to let him keep all his roosters forever, that he needs to start thinking about what he's going to do about them. We were joking about maybe he should train his chickens to do tricks or something and sell them to a circus.

(got this idea about goats trained to pull a cart)

Do you go to many of the chicken events around our area ? (out of the area ?)

I haven't been to any chicken events except the local fair. Hope to one day soon.

True that most people buying chickens do want them for dual purpose. I have a hard time letting go of the roosters too.

We wanted to try and organize a local swap and sale once 4H starts up (pool together all the animals among all the clubs). Would you want to come ? The 4H office in Ft. Pierce always conducts their Master Gardeners Sale every so many months. It would be a perfect location. Just needs some organization/coordination....we'll talk to the leader when the club starts up (hopefully sometime next month).

Arcadia isn't too far away. I like to go there, versus some of the farther drives. There was a show last March and I think there's one coming up Mid-Oct.

All these other places seem too far for me to tag along with because they would get back to late or have to leave too early in the morning to get there. Good thing my husband likes to drive. The kids are very lucky he's willing to do so much for them. (Like build this new huge chicken coop !!)

I'd be interested. Not sure if I will have anything available, but would still like to see and meet others in the area.

Most of mine are mixes. I only have Australors and Silkies that are pure.

Great ! I wrote your name down so I wouldn't forget you. I'll definitely message you if we can get it organized.

If it works out well, we may have them on a regular basis ! Wouldn't that be nice ?

Thanks,
