My daughter has really become involved in her local 4H and has had great luck with her garden, and has been selling her extra vegetables, to raise money to buy chickens... We have narrowed down our choices to Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks... Due to winter hardiness and size and quantity of eggs... We know it is late in the season, and we are not expecting much, from them this year, but we are looking for anyone who may have some laying hens to sell, in our area... We have tried craigslist and local papers, without much luck... We only need 3 and are willing to pay a reasonable amount... We would also appreciate a confirmation of our choices or maybe some input on another breed that may be more appropriate for our area... Thank you... Please contact me... (Robert) 615 390-2781

Welcome to BYC!

Good choice of breeds! You might want to start in your state thread to chat with your chicken neighbors. Maybe some one nearby has some of these breeds available....

Good luck and I hope you can find some of these great birds soon!

Welcome to BYC! I have had both Buff Orpingtons (presently have 4) and Barred Rocks (none right now) and like both breeds--especially the sweet temperament of the Orpingtons. Another breed you might want to look into are Black Astralorps. They are very cold hardy, friendly and docile birds and will usually outlay either the Orpingtons or the Rocks. Good luck in purchasing your flock.

I have some Black Australorps along with White Leghorns and Silver Laced Wyandottes. Right now the Black Australorps are my choice. They have Orphington temperamental. They are cold hardy and they are very good layers and they are beautiful chickens.
