and have a happy 2015!

My rooster is young but very active. I know that he needs more hens but I am concerned with adding to this flock of six. We received the three RR first from a friend that was thinning her flock. The BR came months later as pullets and although chased for a few weeks were accepted eventually. The friend that gave us the RR took ill and had to have surgery and asked if we could watch over her remaining three RR while she recooperated. Within 10 minutes of their arrival the fighting ws so vicious we had her take them elsewhere for fear of their survival. I want to add a few more hens to this flock as I would like to hatch eggs but I am concerned. My new chicks will be a seperate flock yarded in a different area.

You have some good, dependable, dual purpose breeds. Be careful of keeping too many roosters. The recommended ratio of roosters to hens is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. As they mature, too many roosters will become very hard physically on your hens; over-breeding them, biting and plucking the feathers from their necks and backs, battering them, and potentially, seriously injuring them. The only reason you really need a rooster is to fertilize eggs for hatching and 1 rooster can easily handle 10 hens in this regard. Good luck with your flock and your hatch.
