Hi all,

My name is Mark, I moved from Toronto, Canada to Falkensee, Germany. I've stumbled upon this page while looking up "How to grow a chicken from an egg" and have become very interested in starting a coop for all natural healthy eggs and chickens. I'm thinking of opening up a small business here, so I figure this will be the best option, something people will enjoy and hopefully come for a healthy breakfast.

I am new to the whole experience, and there's a lot I still have to learn. Any suggestions, tips and/or advice, please feel free to message me.

Willkommen Freund! What are your goals for your restuaruant? Organic? Not sure what other angle you can take to compete against the factory megafarms. But if I were to do it:

Barred Rocks are the best duo purpose breed, along with Black Astrolops. Leghorns are the best layers. Grow a garden to feed your chickens. Feed your garden from the compost. Free range your chickens to save on feed.

Oh, and never ever ally with Italy.

Thank you Spifflove, I will look into those breeds to see where and if they're available to buy/raise here. Yes, I'm going organic all the way! (Free run with music and spa treatments for relaxation) :p

What kind of garden do you recommend works best? I've never grown anything, but I'm very serious about this and I've always wanted to do it. I mean, I think I have the theoretical knowledge of how to do it, but no actual practical experience (yet).

I am still working on my compost. But in spring I will plant alphalpha. Fruit trees are also good for shade and dropped fruit. The best advice about chickens is in the oldtimer's thread under managing flocks. I am up to page 550

Some breed characteristics:

Barred rock: excellent layer, big, hardy
Astrolop: excellent layer, big, hardy
White rock : Very good layer, big, hardy [I own chicks]

Speckled sussex: Good layer, large size, great looks [I own chicks]
Orpington: Average layer, large size, great looks, great tempermant. [I own]

Jersy Giant: Average layer, huge size

Leghorn: Prolific layer of large white eggs, small, flighty [I own chicks]
Silver spangled: Good layer, great looks, small flighty [I own]
German Spritzberger: Good layer, great looks, flighty

Swedish Flower: Expensive, good layer, fair size, fantastic looks [I want]

Hope this helps! But feed is very costly so you will need to find a supplier. Also you will need a coop before birds.
