Wife, daughter and I have a 10 acre farm and a couple of horses. We are beginning to plan for some laying hens... Researching and really enjoying all your posts!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Do you have a breed preference?

Just great layers, open to suggestions that can tolerate Georgia heat!

I would recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars), which are hardy (both heat and cold) and friendly, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool to help you determine which breed is best for you. Just be sure and click on "show more characteristics." Even if you don't get your chicks from Murray, the chick selector is still very useful for narrowing down your choice of breeds or hybrids. Whatever breed or hybrid you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
