Hello!
I just bought my first house last year, in the town of Greece NY. My postal code is from Hilton NY but it looks like the taxes I have to pay them to the town of Greece, so I have to follow the local laws of the town..
Last year I planted a really nice garden, with a lot of vegetables, tomatoes, corn, and cucumber.
My expectations where really good, since I also fence it against the deer that surround my property.
I also have 5 apple trees and 2 pear trees, so I was also expecting to have lots of fruits during the year..
But what I was not expecting is that my property is full with insects (I am coming from the city lol), so they literally eaten everything, my garden (the only thing that survived was the asparagus), and all the apples and pears, gone or not good for eating..
I was devastated for the situation, so this year, I decided to fight it back, but in an organic/chemical free way, using diatomaceous earth, powder of chicken egg shells, and chickens!
My plan was to build the chicken coop with reused materials, and use the old playground near my house as the bones.
Everyday after work, I spend few hours working on my project, and imagining my new chickens eating those nasty insects, and all the organic fruit and vegetables that I am going to get from my wonderful land.
My expectations where destroyed by my wonderful town's regulations (Article 211-30B, C, and D), that basically states that I cannot have chickens, no matter the size of my property (I have 4.2 acres), because Hens are very dangerous cool blooded animals, and therefore if I have a small flock I could find that one day they went to a neighbor house and kill the whole family.
C'mon! Seriously?!?! it is better that I spray dangerous chemicals that could cause cancer to my family and maybe even my neighbors, to control the nasty bugs that are eating all my food!
Uff! I am V E R Y M A D right now.
I am going to start a campaign that may last years, but I promise that the town of Greece is going to allow chickens as pets. I will use all the means on my hands, specially social media, change.org, web campaigns, meetups, and a formal petition to the board of Greece..
Please wish me good luck, and if anyone is living on the Town of Greece (or paying taxes to them, like me...), just join the fight, because you never know if you would like to have chickens in the future, I guaranty it will be at least interesting
Also consider to join the facebook's page.
