Hello, everyone! My name is Jessica. I am the 36 year old mother of three young girls, trying to lead a healthier, self-sustained existence in Punxsutawney, Pa.
My family and I have made the decision to raise backyard chickens right here in town lol I did call the city to make sure there are no ordinances. There aren't. I can keep as many as I like, too, so long as it doesn't interfere with the noise ordinance that DOES exist
We decided on 4 Buff Orpington hens, since they are docile, good with children and cold hearty. If we didn't have so many close neighbors, I would agree to a rooster as well.
Our chicks are coming from Meyer Hatchery. We decided on also welcoming a Meyer Meal Maker, as we had planned to supply eggs to families anyway. I'm praying it's not a rooster and in fact another laying hen. We plan to process the hens for meat as well, at around 2 or 2 1/2 years of age. My children are well aware of this. I've made it clear that we will love the hens for what they are and what they provide, we will treat them well and with respect, talk nicely etc, but, we cannot become TOO close, as one day, they will be on our dinner plates and in our soup bowls. We may, however, keep one at a time for the girls to call "pet", to love and gather eggs from only, a pet they can lay to rest and mourn when her time comes. We shall see
I am not new to chickens, per se, as my father did have some on our small farm when I was a young teenager. I WILL have questions for all you vets, though. I am very excited about embarking on this venture and in meeting new, like-minded people. To share experiences and pictures. Hardships and victories. I feel at home here already
I look forward to knowing you all a little bit better.
Blessings,
Jes
