Hello, everyone! My name is Jessica. I am the 36 year old mother of three young girls, trying to lead a healthier, self-sustained existence in Punxsutawney, Pa.

My family and I have made the decision to raise backyard chickens right here in town lol I did call the city to make sure there are no ordinances. There aren't. I can keep as many as I like, too, so long as it doesn't interfere with the noise ordinance that DOES exist :) We decided on 4 Buff Orpington hens, since they are docile, good with children and cold hearty. If we didn't have so many close neighbors, I would agree to a rooster as well.

Our chicks are coming from Meyer Hatchery. We decided on also welcoming a Meyer Meal Maker, as we had planned to supply eggs to families anyway. I'm praying it's not a rooster and in fact another laying hen. We plan to process the hens for meat as well, at around 2 or 2 1/2 years of age. My children are well aware of this. I've made it clear that we will love the hens for what they are and what they provide, we will treat them well and with respect, talk nicely etc, but, we cannot become TOO close, as one day, they will be on our dinner plates and in our soup bowls. We may, however, keep one at a time for the girls to call "pet", to love and gather eggs from only, a pet they can lay to rest and mourn when her time comes. We shall see :)

I am not new to chickens, per se, as my father did have some on our small farm when I was a young teenager. I WILL have questions for all you vets, though. I am very excited about embarking on this venture and in meeting new, like-minded people. To share experiences and pictures. Hardships and victories. I feel at home here already :)

I look forward to knowing you all a little bit better.
Blessings,
Jes

Congrats on the soon to be new chicks! I hope they arrive safely. Meyers is a great hatchery.

You will want to stop by our learning center for lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry. There is another article I will include on raising your new chicks for the first 2 months...

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Thank you so much!! I really appreciate that.
Before joining, I lurked for a few days. I have been alllll over the learning center, so much so, that I actually started dreaming of chickens!! lol
I think I'm chickened out! haha
We are still awaiting the chicks, who should arrived by Tue or Wed. I've got everything we need to get started. Just hoping hard that we can get them all (alive and healthy) to adulthood.
Many thanks again, for the warm welcome and the links!!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Good luck with those little peepers!!

Two Crows gave you some great advice. Remember to reduce the heat by 5 degrees each week, watch out for pasty butt, give them lots of food and water and of course enjoy them! Chickens are a joy and the little chicks are pricless! Enjoy them and feel free to ask any other questions.

Welcome to BYC, Jessica (that's my daughter's name). Buff Orpingtons are a great choice with children. My children, and now my granddaughter, made pets out of our BOs. Good luck with your flock.
