My Name Is Pete, I join this group to help me decide if having chickens will be a good fit for my wife and I.
I just retired . and I am into gardening . Trying hydroponic for the first time. also have a few raised beds . I am thinking that having a few egg layers will and to my gardening and help keep me out of trouble.At the present time we don't eat a whole lot of eggs but I am sure I would eat a lot more if they were available

Everone needs a few chickens. They can provide eggs, plus they are very entertaining! Just be sure to build their coop a little bigger than what you think they need, more space makes for happier birds, plus chicks do happen.

Welcome to BYC Pete. If you get more eggs than you want, you can offer some to your neighbors as "hush money," so they won't complain about your chickens. Or if permitted in your area, you could sell eggs. Too many roosters- then you could offer them to folks as future dinners. Your neighbors might just end up loving you.

IMHO, chickens are there perfect retirement hobby and an excellent compliment to gardening as long as the little darlings are kept OUT of the garden until after the harvest is complete.
