Hello everyone. I am Gunnermccaw and I am a newbie to raising chicks. I have had my 8 Orpingtons for 4 weeks and I already love them! They are filling out with lots of feathers and are getting along very well. I am grateful for all of the information on the website and have learned so much already. I may as well start out with a question. I saw what looked like a small amount of blood on the wood plank where some of the chicks play during the day. The first thing I thought was that one of them is sick! They all look fine and very healthy so I don't know which one to remove. They are living in their future hen house that is built over their future yard. They were vaccinated at the hatchery but not sure now what the vaccination was for. I will call monday to verify. Should I be anxious at this point? I am going to check often to see if I can isolate the chick having the problem. Thank you

Welcome. I just read your post. Just watch them closely. One May had pulled a blood feather out. That does happen. But without seeing them I couldn't tell you exactly. I would examine them closely. If they are eating, drinking, and pooping, I wouldn't worry to much. They are hardy little buggers.

Welcome to BYC!

X2 on the blood feather. They can get knocked around and bleed easily. As long as everybody is running around, eating, drinking and pooping, there isn't anything to worry about. Just keep an eye on them. If they look healthy, then there isn't anything to worry about.

Enjoy your new babies! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! I love Orpingtons for their beautiful feathers (mine are Buff) and their calm, gentle temperaments, and keep a few of them in my flock for just those reasons. Good luck with your flock.
