After 20 years of active duty service my husband has retired (Air Force). We've done the traveling and moving but, now we are back home and enjoying all of our two legged and four legged kids. I inherited my sisters chickens to raise and when we moved they were given to a friend. You see - my sister lived in the high country of Arizona - yes, it does snow up there. And we choose to move down to the valley - no snow and lots of heat. We figured that her chickens would be better off staying the that climate versus coming with us. So, we found a house on approximately 2 acres.

In comes, our two legged feathered kids. Our first chicken, is Sydney (Bantam ? not sure of spelling) for a long time she was our only one. So she ran around with our dogs. We believe that she is actually part dog. When we come home from work she's running with the dogs to greet us. And then she starts talking and telling us about her day.... So then we finally added 10 more chicks, now chickens. We even ended up with two roosters - their mini chickens. They grew up together so we haven't had any major issues with them like fighting.

So, then we added 2 male Rouen ducks and 2 female (unknown breed) ducks. And of course we didn't know their sexes until five or six months after we got them. The first indication was the males curl at the base of the back where it meets the tail. I'm going to fast forward a lot of months. We came home this afternoon to find ours ducks have had ducklings. We had know idea but mother nature took it's course.

I do however have a concern. My male Rouen ducks have started changing colors. They have changed into the coloring pattern of the female rouen's. Not sure if this is common do to where we live and the temperature being so high. I would appreciate any insight you have on this matter. I'm hoping it's just do to the fact it is summer. Thank you!!

If you go to the "Other Backyard Poultry" thread you can locate some duck threads, they are the people who could give you better advice. I wish I could see your "dog" chicken she sounds like quite a character.

Welcome to BYC. Don't worry about your drakes. The plumage change is normal and is termed 'eclipse' plumage. This fall they will molt again and the green head and drake colors will return.
