Just wanted to take the time to introduce myself (I think I may have had an account before, but it was forever ago). While we do not have any chickens currently, I've had a huge desire to raise my own for a long time. Though I've never had them as an adult, my parents kept chickens on occasion when I was growing up. I remember my Dad having Rhode Island Reds (I think that's what they were called) and when I was very young we had some Bannies (spelling?) that were terribly mean. Also growing up my extended step-family had geese, ducks, horses, chickens, dogs, cats and any number of other types of animals.
I found these questions to answer in this thread so here goes:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am a newbie!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
none currently
(3) What breeds do you have?
Just starting to look into the different types of breeds.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Yoga, blogging, camping, hiking, bicycling, cooking, gardening, composting,
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We live in Jacksonville, Florida. Currently the north-side in a neighborhood that does not allow chickens, but we are moving at the end of August. We're hoping to find a home with a yard so we can get a small flock started.
Between us we have 4 children: two grown (mine) and two elementary aged (his). We also have a Persian cat and are starting up a Cattery.
I run a gardening/traditional food cooking blog. We are starting to get into long-term food storage and learning how to be more self-sufficient. I think getting chickens goes right along with that.
I'm glad I (re)found this forum before we purchased our first chicks. I'm hope to learn as much as I can before we get started.
