Hello from Idaho - picking up our pullets today

Hi everybody! My name is Amber and I live outside of Boise, Idaho with my husband Don and our almost 6 month old Connor. My husband is outside finishing our coop as I type this and we will be picking up our pullets around 6pm MT. We are getting 2 Golden Sex-Link and 1 Rhode Island Red. We are very new to this although I have an experienced family member in NY willing to answer any questions we have. Our purpose for getting some chickens is for egg laying. One day we may work up to raising as a food supply as well, but that is not anytime in the near future and the ability may not be in my heart at all.
I have a simple question that I can't really find the answer to anywhere..maybe because it is common sense but I'm not sure. With our baby, I am just curious how old your children have to be to interact safely with the birds? Also, can we take him with us to go pick them up in the same car or should my husband just go by himself?

I will be posting pictures of our coop and birds on here once I browse and get acquainted to the website a little better.

I'd love to hear some feedback on the baby and the pullets in this thread though if you have any. Thanks for reading

Absolutely go as a family to get your pullets. Children should always be watched around birds. The possibility of hens/pullets flogging a child is remote, but it does exist. Chickens also peck at bright objects and a child's eyes might be an attractant. Just as you should never leave a child around dogs, be cautious around chickens. Also wash his hands after he has touched the birds. Enjoy your new flock.
 
Thank you for the response. I am more worried about salmonella and things like that but I'll just make sure we practice good hygiene just like we do when going to the store or something. We would never leave him alone with them. Definitely know that from owning a dog.

Well, we ended up getting 4 birds. They are all 4-6 weeks old and we have a buff orpington, light brahma, silver-lace wyandotte, and a golden sex-link. We are really excited about having them home finally and ready to get to know them! Our baby is a little unsure about them right now, but I'm sure he'll warm up to their sounds and strange smells soon!

Should they have a roosting bar outside as well as inside or is it strictly just for sleeping on at night?

They can have a roosting bar for playing with if you want, we gave our chicks one when they were younger. Usually when they grow older they only use the bars to roost at night though.

Be careful when your child is around the pullets, and always supervise.
You can set up a roost outside, but it's totally up to you. We used tohave an old outdoor play roost which was just an old piece of wood on some bricks.
