Well, I've been lurking around for a couple of weeks and finally decided to join up.
Don't let my username fool ya. I have no farm (as of yet!). My husband and myself (newly married July 9th, '11) own one slightly overweight golden retriever, Jessie, and an adorable little devil-kitten named Lilly. Next spring will mark the beginning of my chicken adventure. (I will also be planting a very large vegetable garden.) The chickens will be kept for eggs and meat, so I'm leaning toward one of the following: RIR's, Barred Rocks, or Buckeyes. RIR's are winning out so far. I'm planning on starting out with 5 hens and 1 rooster. It will be very hard for me to not get more than that, but we are renting, and there is barely an acre of land, so six is probably all I should have for now.
...once we have our own land though, there will be chickens, cows (for milk and beef), pigs, more dogs and cats, holiday turkeys...the more I learn about the food that we are sold in stores, the less I want to eat it.
So, that's me in a nutshell. I've already learned quite a bit just by lurking these past few weeks, so hopefully, come springtime, I'll have learned enough to keep 6 fuzz butts alive. You might be ready to ban me from the forum by then, too. I am full of an infinite amount of questions and curiousities.
