Hello from Laveen Arizona (SW corner of Phoenix). New to chickens, wife’s family raised turkeys.

Brooder is all assembled, working on getting the coop set up.

Looking for advice as to where to buy some chicks in Phoenix area. Looking for good layers that will do well in the heat.

Was thinking about Dominiques, Barred Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island or New Hampshire reds. Would also like to know about white leghorns, specifically if the can handle the heat.

G’Day from down under Salty :frow Welcome!

Sorry, living in Aus, I am not able to assist you with a hatchery/breeder recommendation in your area. However, you might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello; folks there should be able to assist.

You might also be interested in downloading this free e-book My First Year With Chickens and this article may help you decide on a breed: Pickin a Chicken

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

The Learning Centre is a great resource. Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles to also be a good resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Good luck and best wishes!

If your set up is large enough, try out a mixed flock with a few of the breeds you're most interested in. It's fun to see the differences in the birds and eggs plus it will give you an idea of what you might want to add later.

Best of luck with all your plans!
