Having been raised on a Dairy Farm and retired from an Agricultural Career the 'ole adage' about taking the boy from the farm but not getting the farm from the boy is certainly true in my case.
We live in 'suburbia' raise vegetables, fruits and enjoy canning and perserving our harvest as well as sharing with the neighbors.
Last year I came home with two Silkie bantam hens from the State Fair and we have enjoyed the mother and daughter duo now for almost a year. The Mother hen passed away suddenly two weeks ago and the remaining hen went broody a few days later. Figuring that she would be happier with some company we set six Rhode Island Red fertile eggs under her and are anxiously awaiting for the hatch date (which is in four days).
Looking forward to sharing experiences and gaining knowledge for backyard chickens with this group.
Anyone in our area of Kentucky drop us a line and say 'hello'
