So here I am...I am a northern Michigan girl who relocated years ago to Ormond Beach, Florida...I have had many experiences in my life with nature and wildlife and this new adventure with my students who have intellectual disabilities is the next big adventure.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am not new to chickens, however it has been years. We lived in the middle of the woods and had our makeshift farm. We raised chickens and although 2 were pets, we had fresh eggs and I learned to kill, clean, and cook a chicken at a young age. When I left home to be a grown-up (never), I left behind the fuzzy and feathery friends and have just gotten back in the game of having them with the only purpose is eggs and to teach my students how to care for living things and life skills associated with selling eggs and veggies.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 17 lovelies I ordered from Chickens for Backyards. We were to get 15 and 17 were in the box on arrival. 16 hens and 1 rooster (named "Colonel").

(3) What breeds do you have?
We have Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rock, Delaware, Black Aust., Lt Brama, and Domenique. A couple of each...WE LOVE our babies!!!

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I was looking for different things as far as raising them...it has been A LOT of years since we had them and I had parental help back then...lol

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Anything outdoors...I would love to just do outside stuff all day...animals, trees, gardening, heck, pulling weeds is therapeutic for me!

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am a mom of 1 (almost 24) and a grandma (Yia-Yia) of two beautiful little girls ages 3 and 1. I have 3 cats, a dog, all these chicks, a rabbit, and a guinea pig (the last two are the inside class pets.)

I am excited to learn and make connections with others on this site! Thanks for being you!

Hi Lynette, thanks for the interesting intro! You might enjoy chatting with other members in FL, that can be really handy when dealing with local type issues (like the weather)...here's a link to get you to your state thread:Florida

Best of luck with your flock and your classroom projects!

Hi Lynette from Northeastern Missouri! Welcome to The BYC flock. We are so glad that you joined us and hope we learn from you as you learn from us! It's amazing how much knowledge is out there and how willing chicken owners are to share it it with one another. So sit back and enjoy.

G’Day from down under Lynette :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock or other critters, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Welcome to BYC!
