hi im Elissa707 or Elissa or 707 or whatever. im a highschooler in Massachusetts and was going to be gettting chicks this spring.. but its probably going to be more like this summer now, because my grandpa is too busy and i need his help to build the coop and run. and im stilll working on saving money... so im now currently a lurker on BYC and BYH. i plan on being a farm vet and author (fiction) after college.. and my fave animals are goats, chickens, ducks, and dogs. in no particular order. i also want to own a farm (i actually have a full list written up of every animal, mini cows, goats, ducks, chickens, pigs, bees, dogs, cats, and maaaaybe sheeps (sheep? whichever one is plural)) ive been lurking here since.. sometime in june, so i figured id stop being creepy and make an account.
i really want to, but my parents said i absolutely can not get any chickens until after the run and coop are done, because ive been known to sit and play with my pets when there is more important work to be done (ie, homework, projects)
i was looking at ordering from Meyers, because they can sex the chicks at day olds (with reasonable accuracy) and my grandpa said no roos. i want to get a australorp, a silver laced wyandotte, a easter egger, a welsummer, and a faverolle. im on the eastt coast, about an hour from Boston... and i cant find gettysburg on this map.
Elissa! I'm a newbie that has been lurking for quite some time as well! Make sure you check this show out https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=420808 Not exactly sure where in mass you are, I know you said an hour from boston but not which direction
I have family in Melrose and Wakefield which are both just a few minutes outside Boston. Even if you can't get any chickens now you might be able to find a local breeder at the show and get some quality chicks later down the road. I wish I waited to get better quality chicks, don't get me wrong we have fun with our hatchery flock, just wish they were even close to their standard. I know my DD and I will be there looking for a breeder we can get some hatching eggs from!
Welcome Elissa!! Welcome to the forum! I live about an hour from Boston as well.....in Palmer. Lots of good folks here and there's not a question you can ask, that somebody doesnt have the answer for.
Take it slow and dont worry about having to wait. Even adults struggle with doing their chores, before playing with their birds!! (at least I do)
