Hello all,

I have been researching back yard chickens for awile now and have come across this forum so many times, I thought I should join!

We moved into s new home this fall with a 1/2 acre of land. I would like to start build a small coop and run this coming spring and raise the 6 laying hens my town orrdanice allows.

I would love any suggestions on back yard chickens in Maine!
Thanks

Hi there and a big welcome to BYC - great to have you onboard! Its just my opinion, but a shed makes for a great coop as its flexible and you can keep your feed and other chicken stuff in the same place.

All the best

You may want to peruse the coops section first. Many sizes, styles, materials etc. Rule of thumb is 4-5 sq.ft per bird inside the coop (not counting roosts and nesting boxes) and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outdoor run.

It would be a good idea to post on the Maine thread and ask what breeds tolerate the weather best, and what kind of coops they have to handle such weather extremes. You also may find some chickeners near your area.

Welcome to Backyard chickens.
