Hello from Maine!

Hello! I am new to chicken raising. First year and already enjoying it. We have dual purpose birds as we plan on processing roosters when we have an oopsie and an occasional hen and we are looking forward to fresh eggs. My husband use to process chickens so he knows the ropes. Most of our hens we will let lay a couple years then process for stew meat. Of course Iā€™m an animal lover so I already told my husband if any are attached to me and vice versa, they are staying until their natural demise ha! I do however understand the importance of raising our own meat and growing our own veggies. I just wonā€™t be around on ā€œthe dayā€.

Currently we have 11 chicks approx 7 wks old.

4 light (white) brahma pullets ( at least we hope pullets)
4 golden laced wyandottes ( also we hope all pullets)
3 black Australorps, which we know for a fact one is a cockerel as itā€™s visibly obvious ha! Heā€™s very comical to watch run around, too. Heā€™s probably my favorite other than a little Wyandotte that is the most curious of me and my cell phone ha!

The wyandottes tend to be the most curious of me and what Iā€™m doing in the coop. The little cockerel will come to me when I enter because I always had feed in my hands for him ha! I figured better to befriend the rooster right out of the gate ha!!
The other Australorps watch me, but shy away if I try to pet and the brahmas stand their ground but are very sweet and absolute beauties! I can sit in the screen room with them all day, but then my 4 dogs would get jealous šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø I also have a male Guinea pig that Iā€™ve tried for years to buddy him up with a friend, but he wonā€™t have a roommate so I spend a lot of time with him, too and he seems quite happy popcorning all around the enclosed porch with me šŸ˜ŠšŸ‘šŸ» I clean homes part time but would much rather stay home with all my animal friends šŸ˜ƒšŸ“šŸ„šŸ¹šŸ¶

Iā€™ve attached a few photos of my chicks. If any stand out to you as a potential rooster, please tell me ha! Iā€™m having a hard time with the wyandottes.

This forum is awesome. Iā€™ve had many questions answer just by reading the forums! Thank you!
Welcome to BYC!! Your pullets are so pretty! ā¤ļø

Hello, fellow New England-er! We got our coop from Maine. Do your chickens have names? We let the nine-year-old name ours šŸ˜¬
Hello! Well, since we are processing them eventually, we kind of decided not to name them, but there is always that one or 2 that stand out and you canā€™t help it ha! We have Ronnie Roo right now, the one little oopsie cockerel, and there is another little Wyandotte that is starting to befriend me so Iā€™m sure a name will come to mind lol
