Small hobby farm with chickens and goats.
We got our chicks in the spring of 2018.
We had planned to get 4 pullets of certain heritage breeds...
Then we visited a young boy who needed to get rid of his batch of chicks, due to weasel break-in.
We found ourselves with a flock of 9 teenage chicks, out of which 4 turned out to be hens.
The young boy called them Barnefelders and Wyandottes, but they do not look like those breeds.
Once they became mature, we slaughtered 4 of the 5 roosters, which was traumatic but necessary. The hens were so much happier after that.
Since then, one hen has been caught by a hawk, and one chick was raised by one of the hens.

I am looking forward to learning more about chickens in this forum!

Welcome! :frow I’m sorry about your rocky begging. How can we help you now? Do you need ideas on keeping the flock safe? A source for a good incubator?
Post pictures of all of your animals for our enjoyment, and to help you figure out what breeds you have.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

So glad you decided to join our community! Yes, sometimes it's necessary to cull the roosters from the flock. The hens will definitely be much happier.

Make yourself at home here and we hope you enjoy BYC as much as we do!! :)
