(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We have our third flock of chickens, the first being almost 20 years ago. Our kids were young and it was a beautiful family experience. Both times before we had all Rhode Island Reds.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Now my husband and I are both retired and for me, the chickens are my pets. At the moment we have 10 chickens.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have 2 Black Australorps, 6 ISA Browns, 1 rescued Silkie and a Bielefelder rooster. Our rescued Silkie may be rehoused in the near future with one of the Black Australorps that we gave to a friend. This is a rather long story which I may share in the future.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Naturally we love having the fresh eggs. I enjoy feeding the scraps to my chickens, I love it when they can free forage around my yard! They are just a pleasure to have around!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I like "reading", mostly audio books, surfing the internet, doing jigsaw puzzels, playing cards, going to movies, watching multiple types of shows and documentaries online.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have three adult children and one granddaughter. Our oldest (son) lives with us and he has 2 male cats (a Bombay and a Maine Coon). As I said before we are both retired. We also have physical limitations which have slowed us down quite a bit.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have known about BYC for quite a while. I guess I just joined now because I was sharing the site with a neighbor who is interested in raising chickens, and I thought maybe I should join!
