I'm so excited about being on the forum! I've been wanting some chicks for a while now, and hubby and I decided to go for it! I only want 3 or 4 (don't want to overwhelm myself starting out ). We have found the perfect coop for us and hopefully this week we can get it all set up and then I can go get the chicks.

I do have a few questions - What would be a good first time bird to get or should I get different breeds ? I have searched and looked online at all the different breeds and wow, there are so many.

Also, do you all recommend that I get chicks or start with Pullets?

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

If you want egg production, choose a bird that produces well. Then select which you think is prettiest. There are a few behavioral differences between the breeds but nothing major.

I've heard that wyandottes can be nasty toward eachother.

I've heard that buff orpingtons are the sweetest.

Welsummers lay the most beautiful dark speckled eggs.

Ameraucanas lay awesome green and blue or even pink eggs

Good Luck with your search.

thats exactly what i was saying ...i wanted only 4 or 5 to start out!!i also have no idea what kind of chicken to get...i thinki can only get babies so how long till they can lay eggs? hummm

If I'm not mistaken (please correct me if I am wrong), hens will begin to lay between 20 - 24 weeks old. That's what I've been reading online. Other way more experienced people on here would know for sure!
