I'm new here and to chickens. I had gotten 6 RIR from a local farmer supply back in the beginning of july. Since then one of my chicks got attacked and killed by one of our dogs. I didn't think she had much meat on her to eat and she was a sweetie so I couldn't eat her anyway. The five we still have are doing great and really love being loose in the daytime. I was worried about it at first but they seem to know how to hang out near edges of trees and brush. They are a ball to watch. My husband and I enjoy giving them kitchen scraps and seeing how crazy they get over it. We have a very low budget house. I made with a dresser without the drawers. I took the top off of it and flipped it upsidedown. Then put the top on the bottom front side of the coop so it could be propped up in the day. They will sit under it for shade and rain protection. The spots where the drawers were are covered with chicken wire and I made two cozy big nesting boxes on different drawer levels with flip up doors for easy access to retrieve those eggs that I will someday see, hopefully soon. Its a three story condo for chickens, Though they seem to all go to the top nest box and sit in a row at night. The lower box doesn't get any chickens in it, But I figure when they start laying that they would use both. And the bottom is they're porch so to speak. They'll sit in the bottom on rainy days and come out to eat in short bursts. I fenced it in a 4by9 foot space.

1 good man, 2 dachshunds, 6 RIR's

great things come in small packages.
