I am brand new to chickens and this forum. My six baby chicks will be hatched and mailed to me the week of May 6th. I am very excited for them. I have 2 buff orpington, 2 rd island red and 2 easter egger hens coming. I have scoured the internet in search of the perfect coop, which I have found!! My coop will be 4x6 and my attached run equals about 80 square feet, I believe. My husband and father are going to be building the coop and run. I plan to post pictures and stories of my progress. I can't wait to start!

you should probably build a bigger coop. When chickenitis strikes you will be getting more and more chicks and wondering where to put them. BYC is a group of chicken enablers, we all think you can't have too many chickens. Soon the overflow ends up in bathroom, bedrooms etc. Think you get my drift. Chicks are like potato chips.

Hello and welcome to BYC

Oh, I can relate... I started with only 4 hens. One day I counted them and they somehow, mysteriously, turned into 107 chickens of assorted ages. Some were even staying in the house. Chicken math is a serious condition. Consider yourself warned

I have already decided to keep my original flock until they slow down on egg laying, then I will introduce two new babies to the flock. I am praying for a broody hen in two to three years to raise them, lol. Please, please, just one broody hen two to three years from now, lol. Maybe I should go just a tad larger. I hate to though because I am trying to keep the initial expense low. My mind is telling me that I will be down a chicken or two by that time and will have plenty room for two more. All i do is think chicken lately. They are like potato chips ... Or chocolate chip cookies!

Lisa, welcome to BYC, and good luck with your chicks when they arrive.
