Hi, my name is David and I'm from Memphis. I'm married and have 4 kids. My wife found out that a neighbor down the street has hens and bought some eggs from them. Well we were hooked! The chickens were also willing to be held, by our kids! So, we started looking into it more and more and here we are. That was about two months ago. Me and my wife have been talking about it, doing research and trying to make the decision whether to do it or not. Well we have come to the conclusion to do it. We will raise the chicks so that they are able to be held by the kids. We live inside the city of Memphis so we can only have 6 hens and not roosters. Predators are at a minimum and we have a completely fenced in backyard. We will have to wait until September to really get going due to not having a coop for one, and we don't expose the chicks to the Memphis heat. So I am actively looking at plans to build a coop, it seems like some of the pre-manufactured kits are made of some inferior woods, that wouldn't last long in our climate and the ones that are built well, are way to expensive. So I think building a coop, will be the best way to do it, and the most economical. Hopefully I can get the coop done in time to have the chicks, if not, we will postpone it. I don't wan't to half way do it and the chickens suffer. That is also why I am doing this amount of research. Well anyway, glad to be here, hope to learn something!
