I am going to try to keep 3 or 4 backyard hens, even though they are not allowed where I live. I chose breeds described as calm/docile to avoid problems with my neighbors. Wish me luck.

So what breed did you finally decide on?

Welcome to BYC!

You might consider house chickens as well. Lots of our members do keep a couple chickens in the house since they can't keep chickens and also for other reasons as well. Here is a thread on house chickens if you have any questions...

Good luck and I hope you can keep your birds without any hassle!

I decided on Red Star, Rhode Island Red, Silver Laced Wyandotte, and Black Australorp.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your hens, hope you don't have problems.

Please have a plan B in case your neighbors complain or turn you in for having illegal chickens. You might be fined etc. and given so many days to get rid of them.

You could have some as house pets but, it works out better usually if they are bantam breeds - less space needed, less, feed, less poo to contend with. They would still need a stealth run or something to go out for exercise and chicken business (scratching for bugs)
