Newbie to chickens. We live in southern Mi. I have 5 Barred Rocks. Only wanted laying hens so ordered 5 cute little black chicks. Now they are 5 months old today and just found out 1 is a rooster. I thought thet his comb was a little reder and bigger then the others, then last Sat. morning I get up to my surprise I her crowing from the hen house. And there he is neck all stretched out crowing for all to hear. I thought he was always more agressive but I just thought he was the dominet hen. Is it ok to keep him with the hens? He won't hurt them will he? Oh and did I mention that 1 of the hen (Helen) is her name is blind. She has eyes just can't see a thing. I always put food and water in the same spot for her and she does great. She dosent purch up with the others or run. She does purch on her nesting box which I put about 4"-5" off the ground for her. Every morning I go out to open the hen house door and there she is in the same box every morning.Well any way that is my story in a few(lol) words. Nice to meet you all

BUT in 4 months our population of birds has drastically increased!
I'm sure you will find yourself addicted in no time!

Keep the little roo, esp if you just have the one!

from southern Michigan too. Where are you? And if I were you I would keep the roo. He might help in telling the blind hen when there is danger. That is one of their jobs protecting the flock.
