Hi, I thought I had started an account before, but could not find any of my old info, so I may have just been a stalker... Anyhoo, I just got into chickens last year, I had told my hubby I wanted to have a few eggies and that I wanted to raise my own meaties as well. I really like the idea of knowing what I am eating and where it came from. So our first foray went well - we actually butchered our first 50 chickens ourselves- whew. We sent the next 25 to the Amish because we wanted them whole, and I was NOT plucking. So at this point I have 4 layers (3 Easter eggers and a red hen from the neighbors - not sure of breed) and an EE rooster who was supposed to be a hen - we have him separate from the hens... My girls have been on strike as far as egg laying goes, but Betty has just started up again - she is laying one pretty blue egg every other day. I am very nervous about the cold snap we have coming up and will be headed to the FAQs to get some info on keeping my cluckclucks safe.

to BYC!

Make sure your coop has good ventilation in the eaves or roof of your coop so that the moisture from pooping and breathing can be whisked away and not fall back down on combs. You might clean out all the old bedding and replace it with new so there is no added moisture to the air. Seal up all cracks and make sure the air around the roost bar is still. You might also tack an old towel to the roost bar to keep feet warm. Warm feet mean warmer birds.

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!
