(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Have had chickens on/off for years. Grew up with chickens and goats
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
After a bout of illness, a raccoon attack, and old age, we are down to four adults. After the attack,we were able to get the last clutch of eggs into an incubator. Of the 16 we set, 14 were fertile, 10 hatched and 8 survived. Given how quickly we had to set the incubator up, I feel pretty good about those numbers. Especially since I forgot to put the turner into the incubator until a couple days later! Two years ago, we had lost a few good layers. Most were over 8-10 yrs. My sister in Texas sent me eggs from her hens. I only got two to hatch, but those two were our current Rooster, King Arthur, and a little white hen named Yeti. Late spring, we had a raccoon get in and attack the hens. We lost Yeti, Stormfly, Glenda the good hen and her sister, Theodora the bad hen. We found a hole chewed into the hen house that was hidden under the eaves. We put the remaining chickens in large dog crates and kept them in the garage while we built a new and more secure home/yard. While we were doing this, we incubated the last clutch of eggs. I have the younglings separate from the adults right now. I hope to introduce them before winter sets in. I think we have 5 hens and 3 roosters. We ended up trapping and relocating 9 Racoons.
(3) What breeds do you have? Rooster named King Arthur, A speckled banty named Arcee, Lucy the enormous brahma who was supposed to be a banty but kept growing lol, and dear old Goldie, a buff orpington. The oldest chick is named Starscream, we are fairly certain she's a hen. Haven't named the rest but my kids are very creative.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Getting to know the personalities of each chicken and the eggs of course.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Gardening, sewing cosplay costumes, and the never ending DIY projects I seem to have going.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I recently celebrated the 24th anniversary of my 28th birthday. I am married with three college age kids. Ten years ago, we moved from Oregon to Minnesota for my husband's job. Quite a climate shock but we like it here. I am a cat foster for a local rescue group.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? My sister in Texas encouraged me to look up information here and I decided to join.
