Hello! From MO!

:welcome Never raised meat birds myself so guess I'm not the right person to ask about that ... One thing I would suggest if y'all are in the process of building a house is make sure to keep ahold of all the scrap lumber , it may come in handy come coop building time.

While I'm old enough to know better then to get into a husband and wife " debate " I will say that you will save yourself a lot of heartache and frustration if you have your coops , runs , hutches ALL those buildings and storage ready to go BEFORE you get you animals . A little planning goes along way

Personally I'm not a fan of free range .... I live in a very rural area in Missouri and have every manor of chicken predator known to man ( with the exception of bears ) Free ranging chickens around here is another term for serving chicken dinner for the neighbors dogs ! I would if I were you have a backup plan in place incase your loses become unexceptable .

Good luck with your plans and everyone always like pictures of coop projects in progress !

Oh my!! Thank you for such a warm welcome!! I'm REALLY wanting Brahmas. So 18 hens, rest for meat. Tho my goal is to have 100 butchered by each fall. Just wanted to start small, but I can't afford to start with 5. We have to do everything in bulk. Lol

Since I'm wanting bunnies for meat too, looking at putting them together under the roof that'll have solar on it. So just house them together at night. Let the chickens out in the day. It appears my house can only hold 70 chickens that way if the cold prevents them from being outside for a week or two in a MO winter. Oh and we're moving near Rolla.

They seem very affordable tho! And we have plenty of scraps cause my kids, yk? Tho right now our dogs are having a hayday...try to cut down on the waste tho...

You can't really house bunnies and chickens together. Brahmas are very large, good for meat but really crappy for eggs, and if you regularly get snow, their feathered feet make them a 'special needs' bird. They don't brood their own eggs, not sure if you knew that.

Yes, my plan was to have the houses and hutches built before getting anymore than the one 2 yo Champagne D'Argent male bunny we have. Since we have to build the structure for the solar panels by May 31st, most of the work on that is done.

I thought it was here that I read bunnies and chickens can go together...maybe I can just let them forage in the bunny house? Keep a coop for them. And yes, we already have tons of extra free lumber we got. So I planned to use that as much as possible.

Hmm...it said Brahmas are good for cold weather? May have to rethink that. I planned to have layers all year, and all meat chickens dispatched before Dec 1st cause we don't really get "winter" until Xmas.

Yes, we were going to hit Lebanon for the chicks. Order in Feb for a June pickup? My hubby is going to be off work the next few weeks to make the house liveable, so we'll be there FT Feb 1st. Then, he'll be off work completely from April 13th to June 1st for the appraisal. If we have a bunny and chicken house, thought that'd boost us up too.

Brahmas "can" work good for cold areas... but not so well on snow. If you have snow their feathered feet will accumulate ice and snow, causing moisture and potentially frostbite.
