I'm brand new to chickens! Been around them only a few months now, but ended up with a clutch that I hatched out between yesterday and today! Due in no small part to all of the information I've found in these forums since stumbling over them a while back. I've got twelve chickens and five chicks right now, that are a mix of pets, layers and for food.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I think back in August at very earliest.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Twelve chickens, plus five chicks.
(3) What breeds do you have?
One New Hampshire Red roo, that was found in a graveyard roosting on a tombstone (his name is Graves), a number of hens that are Delaware/Buff Orp mixes, two rock barred, a black orp and a buff orp, and then my indoor roo Thorn, who's an Olive Egger. I think he's a mix of Copper Marans and Silver Laced Wyandotte? No one came with breed descriptions unfortunately, so it's primarily been identification through trial, error and a lot of asking FB groups (which isn't necessarily accurate either).
I forgot to add Elsa!! She's the Delaware/Buff Orp mix that's indoors with Thorn. She's the old lady hen, who's actively taught him to be a ridiculously sweet boy. I know about hen to rooster ratio! He's interested in that sort of action about once a day though. Maybe. He goes on car rides with me, hangs out at my computer and Elsa tends to come sit next to me if she wants space from him.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
THE PERSONALITIES. They are SO unique and incredible! As someone that's autistic, I'm also astounded at their social skills, abilities and involvement! I love to watch it and in a weird way, it helps me better understand human interactions and psych/soc as well!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gaming. Foraging. Volunteering. I'm disabled, so my hobbies sort of intermingle with finding reasons to get out of bed in the morning. lol
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I've got a dog, chickens, a few rodents scattered about of different species and did wildlife rehab over in WA for a decent few years, with a specialty in squirrels!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've been reading threads here since I got my bachellor flock of roos back in I want to say August? I ended up processing a number of them to feed my community when SNAP cut in November, but I've been using this place as a resource throughout!
